Does your room cry out for a large wall mirror?

Large wall Mirrors can be a fantastic asset to any living room but the range is so vast that it is difficult to determine on what factors to focus on when choosing a wall hung mirror. Undoubtedly the biggest influence on the type and fashion of Wall mirror should be the type of room that it is going into in order that it merges with the current feel.

Which space in your house will this large mirror hang in? As this is about large mounted mirrors, your first thought should be it’s look. Generally the different styles of wall mirrors are Traditional, decorative, Modern, Frameless, Venetian and Kids.

Cream City Ribbon Wall Art

Cream City Ribbon Wall Art

A blank wall is never a fun thing to look at.  Framed pictures or paintings may be expensive, and it’s always such a joy to show off your own works of art to visitors and guests.  If you are renovating your home, remodeling a room for a nursery, or simply thinking of innovative ways to decorate, Cream City Ribbon brings you a new project that you can accomplish with your friends, family members, or children.  You may also use this technique for your scrapbook.

Mounted Cream City Ribbon Wall Art

Materials:

Cream City Ribbon of various colors and designs
Cream City Ribbon scraps
Watercolor
Paint brush for the watercolor
Brush for the glue (you may use an old eye make-up or lip brush, small enough to make lines)
2 pieces, 1/8 illustration board
Glue
Double-sided Tape
Scissors
Glitters (optional)
1. Prepare Your Mount.

Step 1. Choose a design or image outline.  You may get a page from your child’s favorite coloring book, or print out an outline of an image.  You may pick a cartoon character that your child loves, or choose an image that suits your home design or theme.  The heavier the GSM of your paper, the better.

Step 2. Once you have this ready, you may now prepare your mount, so that later on, all you have to do is frame your Cream City Ribbon artwork.  Your mount will be 4 inches larger than the paper on which your image is printed on.

Measure your illustration board.  Add 4 inches to each side of your image paper.  Cut your board accordingly.

Step 3. Once you have cut this board, you now need to attach a string so you can hang it on your wall later.  On the top 1/3 of your board, make two sets of parallel holes.  Then tie your hanging string or Cream City Ribbon through these holes.

Note that the Cream City Ribbon is very strong and can hold up this mounted artwork.

Step 4. Prepare your mount frame.  Cut your second piece of illustration board, to work as a frame that you can place on top of your artwork, once it is mounted on the first illustration board.  Cut your frame, using a width of 4 ½ to 5 inches each.

2. Color your Image with Cream City Ribbon.

Remember that with your Cream City Ribbon, there are a lot of possibilities.  You can shred it, cut it, quill it, tie it, curl it, shape it, and so forth.  Don’t be afraid to try out new things!

Step 1. Work on your artwork.  Paint your image outline with watercolor.  Be as creative as you can, this will serve as the base of your artwork, and the basis of your ribbon use.

Step 2. Once you are finished painting your image, you can work on your outline.

Make an embossed outline of your image.  Twine a long strand of your Cream City Ribbon, and glue it onto the image outline.  This way, coloring into the image will be easier, as it also serves as a border.

Step 3. Fill up the various areas with color and texture.  Cut your Cream City Ribbon into very small pieces of different shapes.  Using your paintbrush, spread glue into the area that you want to fill.  Sprinkle and spread your Cream City Ribbon pieces into the area.

Step 4. Variation of texture, shape, style and technique is fundamental to making a unique and beautiful artwork. For another area, use a different technique.  You can wet your Cream City Ribbon scraps by putting it under running water or spraying them with water.  This way, your Cream City Ribbon, made with natural cotton, will shape into whatever you want.

Now that your Cream City Ribbon is more pliant, you will be able to separate the strands of cotton yarn that it was made into. Use this cotton ribbon, and glue it onto one area using the same principle used in the previous step.

Step 5. Another technique is to quill your Cream City Ribbon into the shape of the area you want to fill.  Once you have done this, glue it onto the paper by spreading the glue (using the brush) on one side, and pasting it onto the paper.

Step 6. Shred your Cream City Ribbon into very thin pieces, and cut them into 1, 2, or 3 inch pieces.  Spread glue on the area you want to work on, and scatter your Cream City Ribbon shredded stems on this area.  This should look like scattered hay, or grass.

Step 7. Make plenty of knots on a length of your Cream City Ribbon.  Place a distance of about half an inch between these knots, and cut at the center.  You now have plenty of little knots to fill up an area.  Glue onto paper.  You can use little glue dots for this to make it neat.  If you want a quicker technique, you can brush the area with glue, and just scatter the little knots onto it.

Step 8. Put curly frills on an area.  The length depends on how long you want the curls or frills to be.  This step is best used if your image is that of a person or character with hair.  Take a piece of your Cream City Ribbon, and glue one end (about just 3 mm) to your paper.  Shred the ribbon up until the glued portion.

Ask someone else to hold down the glued portion of the ribbon while you curl each strand.  You may do this several times, until you fill up the whole area or head portion.

Step 9. Cut your Cream City Ribbon according to the length or width of the area you want to fill and lay them down flat.  You may glue them onto the paper vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.  It’s really up to what you think is best for your design.  You may put glitter on top of these laid down ribbons to add texture and shimmer.

Step 10. Make variations of the various techniques discussed here to continue filling out the various areas of your image.

Be bold.  You may use Cream City Ribbon that is contrasting to the watercolor you used for the area.  Keep in mind that with Cream City Ribbon, you can do as you please.  Make waves, make loops, make quills – whatever you like.

Step 11. LET YOUR ARTWORK DRY FOR AT LEAST 12 HOURS, OR FOR BEST RESULTS, LEAVE IT TO DRY OVERNIGHT.

3. Mount It, Frame It, Hang It.

Once your image artwork is completely dry, you may now mount it on the boards that you previously made.

Put double sided tape at the back corners of your page, and place it at the center of your illustration board.  Tape the frame on top of the paper, making sure to cover the edges with the frame.

If you want it to be more secure, you may place acetate or a transparency film over your artwork.  This protects it from dirt and direct sunlight.  In doing this, you also prevent the artwork from getting destroyed by curious hands.

Cream City Ribbon encourages recycling and using materials that are environment friendly.  Recycling is a great help to the environment, and is easy on the pocket.  Make projects that are eco-friendly and wallet-friendly.  Don’t throw away your Cream City Ribbon scraps.  Use it for other craft projects.

Now, you can hang your piece, and let others marvel at how your Cream City Ribbon Wall Artwork was made.

Be proud of your own creation.

What You Need to Know About Party Wall Matters

What You Need to Know About Party Wall Matters

What do you need to know about party wall matters? That depends… how much of a glutton for punishment are you? If you intend to tackle a construction project that involves a party wall matter by yourself, then what you’ll definitely need to know plenty about the complicated world of party wall matters. You can start with a free copy of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s handy 22-page Explanatory Booklet that we can provide you with a link to. But even that, as the booklet will tell you, is “not an authoritative interpretation of the law.” You’ll have to keep researching all the myriad details of your particular situation. For most people, this does not strike them as fun at all. And if you’ll likely ever do but one or two projects involving a party wall matter, then the huge investment of your time required to master the various regulations is probably not worth it. In any case, you (as the Building Owner ) cannot act as a Surveyor. You can serve the Notices but if the Adjoinming Owner dissents / disagrees then you will have to appoint a Surveyor in any case. But you can avoid much of the hassle by hiring a professional party wall surveyor at the outset and authorising them to act on your behalf throughout the entire process.

Whilst you can serve Notices, if they are not properly written and served then they could be invalid and all procedures that follow are null & void – you go back to square one.

Party Wall Matters

Anyone who carries out certain work involving a party wall, construction on a boundary or excavation for foundations close to an adjoining building anywhere in England and Wales is likely to need to consider the requirements of the Party Wall Etc Act of 1996. One of the most important requirements of the Party Wall Etc Act 1996 is that you must give notice to all Adjoining Owners, even if your construction work does not extend beyond the centre line of the Party wall. That is very important to note: even if you didn’t think you’re affected by the Act because all your construction appears to take place upon your property… you still possibly are. And once your neighbours are legally informed that you are carrying out work that could potentially affect their structure and property, they’re also going to feel much better about your project (and likely refrain from causing you potential delays) if they see that you have entrusted the Party Wall matters to a professional firm of Party wall surveyors.

The Party Wall Surveyor

London Party Wall Surveyors can assist you with your project from start to finish. We’ll perform the initial research to determine your specific job needs and give you a written estimate of costs. A Guide To Using Large Wall Mirrors

Copyright (c) 2009 Julia Ritzenthaler

Large wall mirrors and full length mirrors are in some cases considered essential because they can do a job that other mirror just can’t. In the bedroom for instance, a nice full lenght mirror is an essential part of the morning routine. Large mirrors can be used in so many ways. They can create additional space, and even improve the lighting in a dark space, they can be used to a additional views of a three dimensional object, and of course they can add a nice stylistic touch to the design of your room.

Selecting the Right Mirror:

When working with a very small space, it is important to consider the size of the mirror. Using a very large mirror in such a place may cause the area to appear cramped, so go with a medium size mirror to maximize space, while creating the illusion of new angles. Placing a mirror in a space that is quite large will do just the opposite; you want your mirror to be an aesthetic addition to the room, this way it will just disapear. So in that case look for a really nice large wall mirror.

Full length mirrors are available in various shapes and sizes; you will surely find just the right one to add to your existing decor. Be sure to think about the intended purpose of the mirror. If your intention is to utilize the mirror for dressing and grooming, consider a rectangle wall mount or easel back mirror. You want to have your new mirror coordinate with the design, but not necessary to match exactly. Because you will be using the mirror for a very practical purpose, be sure there is adequate room to move around in front of the mirror.

If you are using the mirror to add light to a dark space, try placing it across from a window in the room. This way you will amplify natural light that’s already available. You can do this similarly by utilizing near by light fixtures to add additional light.

Mirrors are also great for emphasizing three dimensional objects in the room. Place the mirror behind the object that you want to feature, the viewer’s eye will be drawn to the hidden side that is now visiable.

For adding space, lighting, or accenting an object, position the mirror against a wall and away from heavy traffic. This will help the mirror to blend into the design and not become a focal point, but rather to be a part of the whole while still doing the job you are intending for it.

Maintenance & Installation:

Mirror glass will require some cleaning from time to time. If you are eco conscious, you can use newspaper and vinegar. Otherwise, newspaper and any standard glass cleanser will do fine. When cleaning the frame, try a damp soft cloth, such as micro fiber and warm water to wipe down the surface.

When you are ready to install your new mirror, place the mirror in the spot you are considering or if you are hanging it high on the wall, have someone hold the mirror up for you; step back a bit and make sure the spot is right, be sure that you can see everything you want to in the mirror. Then, mark the spot with a pencil at the top end of the frame and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to hang your mirror. Match up the mirror’s top edge with the mark on the wall. Use a level to keep it straight.

Shopping for and installing full length large wall mirrors is a simple and fun process for any home decor DIY personality. With careful planning, and sticking to a budget, you will soon be enjoying the aesthetic appeal as well as the practical function of a brand new mirror.

Fruit Trees Against The Wall

Fruit Trees Against The Wall

Turn the apple 180 degrees and if it comes off the tree it is ripe. Rub it on your sleeve and bite it. You will never taste anything like it from a shop. Crisp, healthy, tasty and unbelievably fresh.

We all know what a commercial orchard looks like – acres of trees planted in regimented rows several metres apart. But not all orchards have to be like this; actually you do not need much space at all to create a small one. Any old wall or fence that gets a bit of sun will do. Apples and Pears, Plums, Damsons and Cherries all grow outstandingly well when trained against flat surfaces. Four or five metres are enough for an orchard with eight varieties of fruit producing enough to feed a family of four.

Choose your fruit carefully. For apples grow an eater that juices well – try James Grieve. Have an eater that keeps through the winter (Winter Gem is delicious and lasts until March) and have a cooker that keeps applesauce, baked apples and apple pies, these are all best in the winter. Go for Lanes Prince Albert. The best pears are Conference, which is an eater that cooks, and Comice, which dribbles down your chin all the way to Christmas. These two will also pollinate one another. Round your orchard off with Victoria plums, Merryweather damsons and Stella cherries that are all self-pollinating. There are your eight varieties.

Grow your fruit trees as cordons. You can buy these ready pruned to shape, or you can prune your own. Cordons are fruit trees that have been shaped to have as many short fruiting shoots as possible. They are planted 2ft (60cms apart) and so can be crammed into a small space. Generally they are grown at a 45% angle which means you get a 3 metre long plant that is only just over 2 metres tall – pickable without a ladder. Because they are so close together, cordon fruit trees make a fantastic screen. Show me a bit of rusty old chainlink fence and I will show you something that flowers its heart out in April and May, is an object of interest in June and July and gives you all the fruit you can eat for the rest of the year.

Cordons are the most versatile of the fruit forms. If you have not got four metres of wall or fence to spare, then try growing them (vertically, not at 45 degrees) on a metal or wood framed arch over a path in the garden. Grow them as a hedge that screens one part of your garden from another. It is probably best not to use fruit trees to separate your garden from someone else’s as you might only get half the crop!

Like all fruit trees, cordons like well-prepared ground that drains reasonably well. So dig your soil over thoroughly, removing roots, weeds and large stones. Add a bucket of well-rotted compost or manure per metre run and work it in well. If you are planting them to grow at 45 degrees, it helps to tie them to long bamboo canes at the same angle, which in turn are tied to horizontal straining wires. Always firm the ground around newly planted trees very well and make sure they are watered throughout their first spring and summer.

Once your orchard is established, plant a couple of the less vigorous flowering clematis to ramble over your fruit trees. These can be cut back hard in winter when you prune your trees and then you will have an orchard that flowers in April, May, June, July and September!
