MANUFACTURED SYNTHETIC DREADS
Currently the most popular synthetic extensions. Done using pre-made 'Elysee Star' manufactured dreads, which look very sleek and uniform. Many of the dreads are also UV reactive under club blacklights. You are required to choose colours and order your dreads from www.afrocare.com before your appointment (they usually arrive very quickly). [click on 'Synthetic Hair Braiding' > and then on 'Elysee Star Dreads']
There is a colour chart on the website if you are unsure what to order and you will require 6 packets of dreads for a full head of hair (less if you have an undercut).

Synthetic Dreads are attached using the 'double-ended' dread method...this involves braiding half of each dread with your own hair, and holding them in place using elastic bands. The Elysee Star dreads come in a standard long length which reach to the bottom of most client's backs. I have shortened the dreads in the past using a braid sealer to melt the ends (see pic HERE) but this results in much blunter, melted dread ends (rather than the more natural tapered ends they usually have)

Elysee Star dreads can actually be re-used time and time again (unlike synthetic braiding hair, which must be disposed of). This means future appointments for dread re-attachment are cheaper, since you are providing the dreads!

Unlike real dreadlocks this also means you can remove the synthetic dreads after a few months, and give you're hair a thorough wash before having them re-attached...and it is also much easier to change the colours!

Another benefit is the fact that synthetic dreads take between 2-3 hours to complete a full head...much quicker than braids!!

HANDMADE SYNTHETIC DREADS

Attached using the same method as above and have the same benefits. The main advantage of hand-made dreads is that they can be made to your specific requirements...which means any length, thickness and colour you desire.

Handmade dreads also look more realistic, as they are made by back-combing & twisting synthetic braiding hair which results in slightly 'fluffier' dreads than the pre-made Elysee Stars. Due to the method used to make these dreads they are also far lighter than the manufactured version.

These are a very effective alternative to real dreadlocks - and if matched to your natural hair colour most people can't even tell the difference! They are also much easier to maintain than real dreadlocks, as they don't require rolling with wax.

Please bare in mind the extra cost when thinking about having hand-made synthetic dreads. Due to the time and hard-work involved in hand-making these dreads I have to charge more than I would for manufactured dreads. This also results in a few weeks waiting time before your appointment to allow for enough time to make the dreads (sometimes longer dependant on my workload at the time)

DREAD KITS

A complete kit consisting of 55 handmade synthetic dreads, rubber bands and installation instructions. Dreads are made to customer specifications, and a maximum of 3-4 colours are recommended.

NATURAL (PERMANENT) DREADLOCKS

I dreadlock hair using the backcomb/twist and wax method. Dreadlocks take a lot of time and care - and will not begin to harden and take shape for a few months, so please bare this in mind! I also offer dreadlock maintenance, which is extremely useful for controlling flyaways at the roots (these can be tamed using a knitting hook, or a needle and thread!)

The more permanent option of natural dreadlocks should be carefully considered. Once hair is locked it is very difficult to comb out dreadlocks (although it can be done!) - however, shaving is NOT usually necessary... hair can be cut to a few inches in length to remove dreadlocks.

BRAIDS

The best results are achieved by braiding with added synthetic hair. This allows for multiple colours to be used, and will result in longer lasting braids (usually upto 3 months, and sometimes even longer).

If you only have your natural hair braided it may only last around 1 month, and the ends must be tied off using elastic bands. However, if braided using synthetic hair I can melt the ends safely and neatly using either a cigarette lighter or professional braid sealer.

As with most types of extensions, I start from the hair at your neckline, and work my way to the front...ensuring hair is sectioned using a 'brick-work' method to allow for minimum scalp visibilty. In some cases I may make the braids much thinner than usual, as is sometimes required for client's with very little or fine hair...this would have to be discussed before braiding begins as it could take much longer and cost more accordingly.

I start each braid using a 4-strand 'boxbraid' method, which results in far less braid slippage and longer lasting braids.

CURLY/ZIGGY EXTENSIONS

Curly extension hair is available in a few different varieties - I tend to work mainly with 'Classy Curl' and 'Ziggy' synthetic hair, both of which are usually available in natural colours only (blondes, browns, black and burgundy)

I braid the extension hair to the same length as your natural hair, tie-off using an elastic band and leave the synthetic hair to hang loose. If required I can leave a few strands of the synthetic hair to hang loose (and not incorporate it within the braids), in order to make the curls appear fuller and more natural. This is completely down to client preference. Some clients also prefer the extensions to be sealed using hair bonding glue rather than elastic bands.

Curly synthetic hair may become frizzy at the ends after a few weeks, and requires maintenance more often than braids - however, if you regularly attend maintenance visits the extensions can last just as long as braids. Ziggy extensions tend to last longer and hold their shape better.

CORNROWS
Cornrows are a form of french plait, and are braided very tightly to the head.

They are very popular at present, especially since ex-page three model Jordan had them during her time in the jungle. Cornrows are also a very popular style with men.

Natural hair cornrows will last up to 1 month before they require re-tightening, cornrows with added synthetic hair can last up to 3 months.
