What length does my hair need to be for extensions?
Your hair must be at least 3-4 inches in length to hold extensions properly. If it is quite short you should be prepared for the possibility of odd braids or dreads to slip, especially along the nape of your neck where hair is often shorter and thinner. With synthetic dreads I may reinforce the hold with an extra rubber band near the root. Regular maintenance visits will help to avoid any mishaps.

For real (permanent) dreadlocks please be aware that you will lose a few inches due to the back-combing involved in the locking process.

How long will extensions last?

Braids and synthetic dreads will last roughly 3 months depending on your hair type and length. However this can vary, as some people may find their hair grows much faster due to the weight of any synthetic hair added. Regular maintenance visits to tighten the extensions will ensure they last longer.

Extensions can feel quite tight to start with, and sometimes a little sore, but they will soon loosen up as your hair grows out and your head gets used to the change.

What hair types are suitable for extensions?

Most hair types are suitable for extensions. If you have very fine hair, or it has thinned as a result of bleaching I recommend more lightweight extensions (handmade synthetic dreads or wool).

If you suffer from Migraines, Epilepsy, neck problems, or skin conditions of the scalp - some styles may be unsuitable due to the weight. Lightweight extensions would also be suitable in this case.

My head is itchy, can I wash my hair with extensions in?

Yes. You can purchase products made specifically for use with braids and synthetic dreads, including every day sprays and spray-in shampoos/conditioners which can be lightly rinsed out. When washing with such products you need to ensure no residue is left on your scalp, as this can cause more itching.
Obviously you won't want to wash your hair everytime you shower or have a bath, so it is also a good idea to invest in a shower cap.

However, braids and dreads will be perfectly fine if you don't wash them. Using sprays alone will help reduce itching, but in most cases your head will begin to settle after the first 2-3 weeks and become less itchy anyway. If you choose to use braid shampoo you will only need to wash your hair every two weeks or so. You can also use your normal shampoo if you dilute it first.

It's best to let your extensions dry naturally after washing, but if you choose to use a hairdryer ensure it is on a LOW heat as most types of synthetic hair will melt when subjected to high temperatures!

Afro-Caribbean braid sprays can be very oily and sticky, and can result in a messy build up after time. I recommend using 'Tea Tree Water' from LUSH on your scalp... tea tree reduces itchiness and this spray smells great too!

For permanent dreadlocks - I recommend Knottyboy products.
The company is based in the USA but have a list of UK stockists on their website.

How do I look after my extensions?

Regular maintenence visits will maximise the life-span of any extensions. I charge £10 an hour for braid re-tightening and will re-tighten as many rows of extensions as possible...meaning you can keep the extensions for much longer than usual. When re-tightening dreads it is often quicker and easier if the dreads are first removed completely.

Be wary of tying your hair too tight into ponytails, or putting it up too often, as this can cause slippage and result in extensions falling out.

Braid sprays will also help to reduce 'fuzziness' and help keep your braids or dreads looking neat. It is also a good idea to wrap the extensions up while you sleep (for example, by wearing a bandana), or you may wish to switch to satin pillowcases.

I want my extensions for a certain date, can you do them?

I work on an appointments basis, so it's best you book early to avoid disappointment. Appointments can be made by email only through the website to ensure my privacy.

How long do they take to put in?
Certain styles will take longer than others, and due to differing hair types - each person is individual. I have tried to provide a rough guide on my prices page.

Do I need to bring my own synthetic hair or dreads?

If you can purchase hair or dreads yourself, please do. Prices stated include hair costs so I will lower them accordingly if this is the case. "AB Beautycare" in Hanley sells extension hair, and www.afrocare.com is the best place to order extension hair or 'Elysee Star' premade dreads online.

If you have other materials you would like in your hair, I will be happy to use them and will reduce the overall cost accordingly too.

Alternatively, if you are able to pay a deposit beforehand I can purchase the hair or dreads on your behalf. Deposits are non-refundable.

Can I get a refund if I'm not happy?

Unfortunately I cannot offer refunds at this time. I cannot be held responsible if extensions are not looked after properly, or you decide you just don't like you're new style.

I am happy to fix small problems (indivual braids slipping or falling out) so feel free to contact me should this be the case as soon as possible.
